Here are the show notes for today's podcast:
Frank:
00:11 hey guys, I am so thrilled to be bringing this special guest on our podcast. This is Dr Mariza Snyder. She is an amazing, amazing person because while, I mean I can say that she's an amazing person because I had the opportunity to both Jackie and I have the opportunity of meeting her through Doterra, but just the things that she is doing now to bring essential education really to the forefront of a lot of women out there has just been incredible. She just recently finished and I'm surprised that she's still here smiling. She's just finished a summit that easily reached well into the tens of thousands. I mean we were just anticipating and listening to all of these different wonderful podcast that she, uh, put together on the summit. There was about four or five different speakers every single day, and correct me if I'm wrong, but I think we raised like 150,000 or something like that for healing hands. Right?
Dr. Mariza:
01:10 We did, we raised a little bit more than a hundred and $50,000 and that's what it was all about, frank. And we do not only educating women on so many of the issues that we're experiencing here in the states or even in Canada or Europe where we have resources even it's incredible. Even when we have resources, we still are struggling. But then being able to leverage that education to raise money for a cause where girls around the world have very little resources and we're able to get money into their hands.
Frank:
01:39 Oh, that's so cool. So anyway, without further ado, let me please formally introduce Dr Mariza Snyder. She is a fan, a functional practitioner. She has now written six books of which I did not even know that, but that's so cool. The ones that I know over the one that's like the best selling a smart mom's guide to essential oils. And then she also did a great book on the Dash Diet Cookbook. And she is like easily now known as one of the pioneers. And one of the, uh, just subject matter experts when it comes to balancing hormones with the power of essential oils. For the past 10 years she's been at wellness centers and conferences. She's spoken on a Dr Oz with Fox News, how mind body green and other publications and she's also the author and the host of the essentially you podcast, which is designed to help women become the CEO of their health and if that isn't enough for you, always go check her out on Dr Mariza, that's m, a R, a z, a.com for women's hormone tabs and some other recipes and remedies around that site. Thank you so much again for joining us today, Dr. Mariza,
Dr. Mariza:
02:47 thank you so much. Thanks for having me. I love you guys so much and it's such an honor to be here.
Frank:
02:53 Well, what. Let's just dive right into it. So you know, I already talked about this summit, so if you wouldn't, for our listeners, if you could just like kind of give us maybe three or five really great takeaway is that you got as some feedback from. I'm really the thousands of people that actually jumped onto this essential oil summit. Like what were some of those things that Kinda stood out to you?
Dr. Mariza:
03:15 I think one of the things that was really profound that I love that stood out to me was, um, Jen and I think a lot of people fell in love with her. She was talking about loving your liver and you know, we, we don't necessarily understand what, what essential oils do in phase two pathways of liver support. And so I learned things like lemon grass helps us import glutathione levels. Um, I learned that the zendocrine blend, the blend that's got geranium and juniper berry and Cilantro, that it also is really important metabolized hormones and helping with that phase two detoxification. I knew a lot of it, but she was able to give details even I was excited to learn about and how when we're using oils like that every single day, we really do give our liver a better chance for functioning. I think so often we forget the importance of the liver plays in the ability for our energy levels, for the ability for our digestive system to work it. It's all much more interconnected than we think it is.
Frank:
04:14 Absolutely. It's the powerhouse of the digestive system. You know, when we think digestive system, we always think of like something like the pancreas, the gallbladder, and don't get me wrong, they're obviously huge functions, but really, you know, everything that we can sell it has to pass through the liver and I really, I really did enjoy that talk with her as well that I thought that it was really fantastic. Then, you know, it's true. Honest to goodness, evidence based science that is now starting to back a lot of these different things that we're starting to understand about how the, the, the bioactivity of essential oils, you know, and, and we've all been saying it for many years, but you know, honestly it's finally starting to really get its head out there. So what else though? I mean like I saw there were some mental health things on there as well. Do you want to maybe provide some insight about that?
Dr. Mariza:
05:02 Absolutely. One of the things that was really surprising to me, Rebecca Hintze had mentioned, and I just, I don't know why it hadn't come to me, was that um, mental illness or depression, anxiety or are becoming the number one biggest disability in our country. Um, I did not realize that I was thinking it was pain. I was thinking it was auto immunity, but I had no idea that we just, you know, we all just kind of push it to the wayside and you know, leveraging the usage of essential oils. Not only that, but the usage of really great plant based supplementation, how that can begin to make a game change. So she cited a lot of research for anxiety, for depression with the use of citrus oils, with florals, like clary sage and lavender. And it was information we don't really get to hear that often in our world. And so it was very enlightening and I think it really pressed upon me how important the subject is and we just don't seem to be spending enough time on it.
Frank:
05:55 I agree. I think, uh, you know, awareness is always key and you know, coming from the military myself, unfortunately in those, a lot of veterans who have actually served, uh, you know, in whatever capacity and a lot of them are coming back with a lot of really unfortunate mental illness and um, you know, I had a great conversation actually with a, with Dr Eric z and he told me that while we can do is if you can change how a person feels about natural healthcare, then you can introduce them to essential oils and then that opens up the flood gates to allow you to actually help out with everything else. And, and, and, and you know, we have this concept called if I may add this concept called comorbidities. And so like the downside is, is that there's like a multiplicative factor of like somebody's mental instability or if they have a mental condition that it actually wreaks havoc upon the physical body. And it actually is in fact something that is easily forgotten. So I echo you. I think that I think that mind, body and spirit could not be spoken about enough. I think the way unfortunately forget a lot about the spirit and the mind and we really need to make sure that we put them back into that triangle.
Dr. Mariza:
07:06 I absolutely agree with you and we do recognize the physiological effects. I think when we're, you know, we loved what Danielle, Danielle talked about with the guts, the guts support that they find that when our patients are extremely severe anxiety, severe panic attack, they have severe gut dysbiosis, severe. I'm just major. Even Nausea, um, ibs inflammation that happens there and that gut emotional connection. And so we do see it. We don't necessarily know it, it's the case that why we're feeling this way or why we're dealing with chronic gut problems is really connected to the, maybe the anxiety that we're experiencing or some of the mental effects that we're experiencing. Time that we can and using oils for gut health can absolutely help with the emotional piece as well.
Frank:
07:54 Yeah, guys, we're not like, we're not joking. I mean it really does start with gut health. Okay. I mean like, you know, Serotonin is actually produced along the Gi Gi system. So, you know, Serotonin is the, was one of the feel good neurotransmitters and obviously if we're not focusing on our guts then we could be in fact causing a, a really bad, incapacitating thing for the rest of our mind. And so, um, I love listening to Dr Daniels stuff while she's soon to be Dr Daniel, I suppose. I think Danielle. Yeah, semester or so left or something like that. And then that wonderful having unlike, you know, I guess defend your dissertation, you know, she still wants to do that. So what about like one more thing? I mean like what was something else like sort of like really jumped out about you during the whole thing? Because every one of them was wonderful. Every one of those were so insightful.
Dr. Mariza:
08:41 I was, I really didn't. You know, I love Laura Jacobs. I love the brain chemistry conversation and understanding the role that oils play within our brain. I think a lot of people don't recognize that essential oils do have a really powerful way of changing our neuropathways. Um, you know, when we're thinking about reducing stress levels. So it was, I was intrigued by Laura's brain talk, I thought that was great. And then the responsibility that we have around we can rehab a really a lot more control around, detoxifying the body then than not. So I did love Bridgit Danner is talk on what we can do to reduce our talk like levels in the body that we have a lot more power with the essential oils than we thought.
Dr. Mariza:
09:20 Awesome. Absolutely. Awesome. Yeah, it was a really wonderful. It was a wonderful summit and I don't think, correct me if I'm wrong, can you still get the recordings or anything like that?
Dr. Mariza:
09:29 We are still raising money so we didn't actually, I mean although it ended because we can't continue to keep hitting people with that, but we kept it open in case because a lot of people who missed it because life was busy or they meant to purchase it and something went wrong. So the door, we still have it open. Um, you guys can just, people can email us and let us know. I think that the links are still up and running, but uh, but yeah, so people are still purchasing it. We had a couple people today and we are, I mean if we can continue to raise money, we're going to continue to rise.
Frank:
10:02 It's so good. I mean like I just can't imagine why that's not such a wonderful cause, you know? And then really. So please go check her out. I mean there's definitely on your website Dr Mariza.com, is that correct? Yes, that's right. Okay, good. So yes, so go check it out. It was five days. It was like at least five podcast or five conversations per day. So Uber amounts of material, Uber amounts of content and probably something that you absolutely cannot listen to long. I mean I know.
Dr. Mariza:
10:27 No. Yeah. And it was so inexpensive. It was 29 talks total and I mean the women that we were able to bring on and we're so we're so grateful you and I to have such a great community of people who are knowledgeable in these areas. And so from mental health to gut health, the thyroid health, I mean, we really covered the whole area of topics of concern.
Frank:
10:47 Yeah, that was, it was, it was fantastic. And I, you guys did a wonderful job of putting it on. We really definitely learned a lot and we thank you guys for that. So let's hit the rewind button. All right, so we're going to hit the rewind button. We're going to go back one decade. We're going to start off. We're going to start off when you maybe were brand new, fledgling Dr Snyder on your way out of school. So why don't you let me know, just so like, you know, give me like the espn highlights, um, about how you came to a really just work this way and your path and your career and everything like that. And sort of like what were those motivations for you with, you know, we'll talk about essential oils of course, but what were the motivations for you to really be who you are and step out who you've become?
Dr. Mariza:
11:30 Absolutely. So, fast forward, 10 years ago, 10 years ago, I was a hot mess. I'm, I'm running as fast as I can possibly run. I had been running like that for many years and I was just getting into practice. I started seeing patients and Lo and behold, a lot of the women who I was seeing, they were struggling with hormone issues, but a decade ago we weren't really talking about hormones. We, they just, they weren't feeling 100 percent. They had no energy. They were putting on weight for no reason that they weren't sleeping throughout the night. Um, and really trying to figure out what was going on, what the same time this was happening with them. I was finding myself in my own hormone crisis. I had severe chronic fatigue. And the thing of it is, is that you can only run so fast for so long without completely falling apart.
Dr. Mariza:
12:15 And that was happened. I remember the day I woke up and I could not lift my head up off the pillow. I had such horrible chronic fatigue. And I ran, we ran hormone test and sure enough, my cortisol levels were completely deregulated. I had zero. I had nothing in the morning and they were jacked up at night. I had literally no progesterone levels. I had, I had estrogen dominance. I mean everything was upside down and all because of stress levels. So I had to, I had to figure it out. I had to, I started using supplementation. It was food, but a big part of it was that I had to let go of a lot of the obligations that I had brought on that weren't serving me. I was doing a lot of things that not only did I not enjoy, but we're, we're keeping me up late at night on these projects.
Dr. Mariza:
13:00 I had to let a lot of things go ahead and bring in self care. That was probably the hardest thing for me because I grew up as a woman thinking that my work was predicated on how much I did for others. So I was the last person on the docket. Um, and that was clearly clearly obvious and my whole family had had hormone issues. I grew up watching my mom struggle with hormone issues. My sister struggled, my grandmother, and we just all thought it was normality. It was just the way that we operated and so to me, watching my whole family operate like this, I just assumed that that was normal until it got so bad that I couldn't function anymore and that's when I had to take a deep look and make some massive changes.
Frank:
13:40 I love how you put that. By the way, I recently myself have started to uncover like Jackie is so good about helping me be so discerning. I love women in the fact that you guys are just it, man. If you're listening to this podcast, like grab a hold of a, of a woman that's in your life and just listen to her. You know, the, the pride that we have gotten. We like, we kind of, let's face it, we kind of think we know it all right? And we kind of feel like we need to do it all. And I love that Jim Carrey movie, you know, it was called the yes man. Um, you learned how to say no guys. We need to learn to say no to things. You know, because if there's the deal, and this is not necessarily meant to be uber profound, but you know, like if we're saying yes to everything are we really not also saying no to a lot of things, like we're not giving ourselves the opportunity to focus on those things that bring us joy and I, and I love that you put that and I mean like guys, I mean that's, that has nothing to do with essential oils, but it has everything to do with a mantra that you should have in your life.
Frank:
14:40 And, and I thank you for sharing that with us. Dr Mariza. That's so true. We have to learn how to say no.
Dr. Mariza:
14:45 Well, and the thing is, is that men and women both some more today than ever before, talk about chronic, you know, deregulation of our cortisol levels. And that's really our perceived environment. We're constantly running from thing to thing and men and women are taking on more than ever before. We're working way late into the night, eight, nine, 10, 11. You know, after we put the kids to bed and you were experiencing severe burnout. So both men and women, we need to look at how we can reroute, how we can reregulate the hypothalamic pituitary adrenal access. So we stopped firing that fight or flight sympathetic nervous system mode where we are in constant survival. I mean that's what your body feels like. Your body feels like you're in survival mode. And I know frank, there were probably times in your life where it felt that way.
Frank:
15:36 Absolutely, yeah, of course. And it still kinda starts the fight that, you know, you still have to fight it because it's that urge to, to want to keep up with the Joneses, you know, it's like, it's almost like every time that you run into somebody that you may not have talked to for a couple of weeks. Right? Like, what's the first thing that we say besides, hello? Oh I'm so busy. I've been so busy. You know, it's like as if like, as if like that's like wait, that's the expected response. Like, like, oh, I haven't been busy. Oh that means that you must not be doing anything. And my goodness, we have to probably look out for you because you know,
Dr. Mariza:
16:16 that's got to be wearing that badge of honor, that and it's, is on the go. I'm busy, busy, busy, like those you gotTa Watch out for that language. And that was, that was my talk track for years and I got to really work on that track today. Like I, you know, when someone asks you what you're doing, like oh my gosh, let me tell you how I'm getting my butt kicks right now. Everyday. All Day.
Frank:
16:39 Yup. Well that's why it's like it's been throwing folks off, but I've been like trying to deliberately tell people like, you know what, I had a really good opportunity to just sit back for 30 minutes and I enjoyed my coffee not to do not doing anything today. You know what I mean? Like it's, it's really that old, like you know, we're from the south and so like, you know, just being able to just kick back it, just chill out is just as important as getting things accomplished.
Dr. Mariza:
17:03 You know, the other side of that is like I am peanut butter and jealous. He sat down for 30 minutes at a copy and didn't do nothing.
Frank:
17:13 Well see, that's the thing is I feel like me personally now I feel like is doing something right refocuses me because then if you take those great periodic breaks guys, then you get that opportunity to go ahead and just refresh. You decompress and you don't have to just keep, go, go, go, go. I mean, let's face it, our bodies are built for moderation and that includes our business levels. Like we are not designed. I mean sleep, it's a morbid concept, but we're supposed to sleep about a third of our life. It still allows us to know that we need to slow down and rest like we are not supposed to be. Go, go, go. And unfortunately in our society these days, um, you know, we're seeing the effects, chronic dizziness and we're seeing what it can do to the body. It can cause. I mean, we lead the, we lead the world I think still in, in cardiovascular problems, you know. And that's definitely because of our different stress induced things, you know, it's, so it's a huge risk factor these days. But anyway, enough about all that, let's continue to talk about you. So you were definitely stressed out. You were, you were, you know, need to learn how to say no if you will. And then sort of like what, what sort of started pushing you into the direction then in the trajectory in which you're in now?
Speaker 3:
18:20 I noticed that, like I had mentioned, I had noticed that it wasn't just me. So besides the buisiness when I went, because you were asking me like what was the reason? What was the impetus for me to get into this? Everywhere I looked, every woman that I saw, every person that I saw was really struggling with the same thing and it wasn't a conversation that we're having and I knew that we needed to address this. And so when it became that every single person that was coming into my office was dealing with the same things and there was no, I mean, not that there wasn't literature or just wasn't a lot of literature. I realized that my mission was to focus on hormones and really get to women to help them begin to heal a lot of the damage that they had done for over a decade or so.
Frank:
19:05 Okay. So, so what do you want to do is you're pretty much wanted to say like, okay, I'm starting to see an actual common theme here. Right. Like you just realized that through your own trials and tribulations, if you will, a coupled with a lot of these patients that you were seeing. What then did you, did you just start like, you know, doing your own kind of research on this thing or did you like start to like really like Kinda like make it more of like a communal thing where I was like, I get it. I understand where you're coming from and sort of like that's what kind of catapulted you toward wanting to figure out how can you help women and help with their hormones.
Dr. Mariza:
19:39 I would say it was both and you clearly. I was doing a lot of research at the time because I was concerned about my own, what was going on with me and and I was finding that doctor after doctor really didn't have a good sense of things that kept just trying to put me on birth control. They just there with the options that I was being offered weren't getting to the core root of what the problem was. And then I also, because I did have patients and we had classes that we did at the office, we taught cooking classes, we taught classes on stress, we taught classes on all different types of subjects. I had an opportunity to really figure out what these women were wanting, what were they interested in, and so I would say that it was a collaborative effort. One, understanding what the women that I wanted. We kind of had a group of women in the office who are working together and then I was doing my own research.
Frank:
20:21 Oh, so good. So it ends up. So it was really like a, like a doctor patient, sort of like, you know, you guys really created that great relationship and. Yes, absolutely. Because I mean like folks there, I mean, you know, granted we're a couple of providers if you will, on this call, but like honestly, like you guys got to bring this information because there's a lot of folks who are in healthcare now. I'm a lot of our, our cohorts and a lot of our folks that just don't get it. I mean just unfortunately don't understand natural health and they, they sort of shun away from it because like, you know, I know that speaking as a medical provider, when you go to school, you're a problem solver. Like you want to go and you're like, I'm going to save the world because I'm going to have my prescription pad and be ready to go.
Frank:
21:04 You know, it's like I know that I'm going to be able to solve something like that. And so, um, I, I just really want guys to understand that, uh, that it really is a patient doctor or patient provider relationship. That has to be the key to your health as the patient, you know, it really does in fact help. And so when did, when did like essential oils then come into play? Like, you know, when did you start looking toward, you know, you talked about some supplementation, but like how did you sort of venture upon essential oils then in that capacity?
Dr. Mariza:
21:33 Absolutely. So yeah, first day was nutrition and supplements. I was making good headway and do I still is interest in supplements still the ticket as well? Absolutely, but it was about, I want to say about three years later, four years later, after this, despite all the things that I was doing, I was definitely getting well, I had my energy back, I was losing this weight that I was holding onto. My periods were so awful, so a lot of those symptoms went away. But the one thing that didn't go away, and you know, I still don't necessarily. I've done a lot of research on this now. When I was chronically stressed, there was no doubt in my mind that it was driving my immune system down significantly. I was sick all the time. I was six, seven times on average a year strep throat, flu, cold. I had it all.
Dr. Mariza:
22:16 I had it all all the time and so after I kind of healed a lot of this, I was still getting sick four to six times a year, maybe not seven, but definitely still pretty consistent. I'd have a toddler come into the office, has their Mama would bring them and they would just hand over whatever they had. So I was missing. I was missing work. I was seeing patients, so I had a good friend of mine who brought me in oil and it was. He was on guard, is an immune system blend and they were like, I'm so tired of you being sick and tired all the time. I want you to try this oil. She didn't tell me what to do with it. She didn't tell me how to use it. Frank, I put this oil everywhere I was. I didn't know what to do with this thing. I quickly did my research and figured out how to use the oils, but she just gave me this blend and let me tell you because of that blends, I did not get sick for three and a half years. Three and a half years. I skipped. What was that? 15 or 20 elicit 20, 20 colds. I just bypassed all of those for three and a half years. I've been sick maybe three times in the last six years.
Frank:
23:19 Wow, that's fantastic. What a great testimony. I mean, yeah, it's like, it always requires and it's always seems to be the most simple things, you know, it's always kind of like, you know, it's just one of those things that you just hit that pain point and all of a sudden it's like it all happens and then look at you now. Right? So like essential oils were the catalyst. You were already getting some things going on and then boom, look at that. It exploded for you. So. All right, so what gave you the fire then to like now start sharing this like mainstream with others?
Dr. Mariza:
23:44 So was pretty.
Dr. Mariza:
23:45 I honestly thought I was ever going to be second one of those things, but like I had, I have had many times in my life because I've been sick before. I bet I had chronic pain and I was told by doctors that I was always going to have to live with it and then I overcame that and that didn't end up being true and it changed my paradigm, but for some reason with these common colds, I kind of really thought that that was the case. I was like, well, I can't seem to figure this out. There's not enough tinctures or vitamin C or herbs in the world is getting my immune system up. When this oil came into my life, I was like, what? What is this? And so I started diving into the research and began to realize like, well, I started recommending to my patients.
Dr. Mariza:
24:22 I recommended all kinds of oils. If they had digestive issues, it was digest. Then on top of their probiotics and everything, if it was headaches, it was this one. If it was pain, it was this one and what was happening is women were coming back because I'll be honest with you, it was majority female driven practice. I find that unless women are driving the dragging their men into the office, it's mostly the ladies and so they were coming back to me and they're like, you know that oil that you gave me for my digestive issues or that oil you gave me for my respiratory and my asthma. Well that oil is, it's clearing up my anxiety that oil is. I don't feel as depressed anymore. I was like, what? And because I was thinking about the. I'll be honest with you frank, I was thinking about the end organ issue.
Dr. Mariza:
25:06 I wasn't thinking about the whole, not all of it. I was like, okay, they've got respiratory issues, nothing else is working. I want you to try this oil and see what happens and then these testimonials we're coming back were all these other ancillary things. All these other winds were happening and so I was like, what? What is this? So I started doing even more research and I really got a dug into pub med. I started looking at what the chemical constituents of these plants were doing, why, why the oils in a breed blend, we're having such a profound effect on anxiousness and um, and I was just blown away by the emotional benefits by all of the other side benefits of these oils that I was recommending and that's when I began to realize that there was a direct connection with these oils and how to support the body and your hormones and that's where I really began to explore and do the research on that.
Frank:
25:56 Okay. And then, I mean, like I said, that book was beautiful. I mean your book about, um, you know, just simply simply put about the smart mom's guide. I mean like I know that you got some different things cooking and we're gonna we're gonna leave it. Yeah. So there's the smart mom's guide to essential oils. Definitely a best seller and go check it out. It's totally on Amazon. It's on your website. I know that. But anyway, that is sort of like a great way to start dabbling folks, but I know that Dr. Ray's got some things and we're going to keep you in suspense. We're not gonna, we're not going to tell you, but um, one thing that she does, one thing that you can offer to you right now, like I said, is go check her out on her website and please go check out the summit that she just did. If we, if we could, that way we can wrap things up here because I know you're very busy. Uh, let's talk a. can you guys give like five action steps that we could use right now to start applying right after we get done with this podcast to like start working on our hormones and start being able to get that sorted out that we've always wanted.
Dr. Mariza:
26:56 Absolutely. So first thing it is, food is so important and I mean we're talking about plants. Eat as many plants as you can do. Eat as many as good protein. You know, you guys, the Paleo Mama is where it's at. They do such an amazing job at showing you how to eat the real food, so cue into how you're eating, what you're eating. Lots of plants, especially for hormones, your liver and your gut. I can't emphasize that enough. One, if you're using oils, get them and use them daily. If you're not using oils, get them from frank. You know where to find them. Um, because that is such a big piece, you know your body wants to be in balance and having the right tools in place are going to get your body there. Now, if you're looking for instant energy, make sure that you have a citrus and admit, so I love wild orange and peppermint for instant energy.
Dr. Mariza:
27:44 Make sure that you've got a morning routine and an evening routine, exactly what frank said earlier today, that cup of coffee by yourself, your body needs that moment to yourself before you become someone else's priority. You need to be your own priorities that you can set the tone for what you were going to do and you set the tone for your day. Have your copy, have your tea, have your oils, have a routine that works and it's only for you, and then in the evening do not Tasmanian Devil your way into the bedroom every night. That doesn't work. Make sure that you have your oil. Get the fusing and my favorite. Go to oils, lavender, Cedar, wood, clary sage. They're all easy to get your hands on. Any mix of those. I don't care. Just get them in a diffuser and change the neuro pathway of how your brain works at night because by using aroma therapy you can change the way that your brain functions before going to bed so that you're not in fight or flight, you're not in survival mode. You are giving your body that opportunity to shut it down and get the deep, restful sleep that you need. So those would be my, my key elements. It really just so much like, you know, frank, it's a lot of lifestyle and why I love oils is they make you creating these lifestyle habits so much more easier and so much more enjoyable.

You cannot do it. You Go, you get, you're not going to grab an elephant's leg and start just knowing away on it, right? You got to eat it one bite at a time, guys. So it's going to be every little day. Let's make baby steps and let's get that health that you've always wanted. So Dr.
